Who We Are

In collaboration with the Prince George's County Police Department Financial Crimes Unit and State's Attorney's Office, Maryland Smith’s Justice for Fraud Victims (JFV) program offers University of Maryland, College Park students a unique volunteering opportunity to work with Prince George’s County to investigate instances of financial fraud against members of vulnerable populations in the Maryland and D.C. areas.

Students work under the guidance of Professor Samuel Handwerger, CPA, to provide free support to victims of financial fraud and assist the police and the State’s Attorney’s office. The typical work includes forensic accounting investigations, reperformance audits, reviewing bank and financial statements, and meeting with law enforcement as well as clients. Based on experience, students take on their roles as an executive, case lead, senior analyst, or junior analyst. Growth throughout the organization is encouraged and we have a variety of teams and client work that students may choose to be a part of.

“Our campus’ strategic plan talks about engagement and impacting our community, and this program embodies that mission…This positions our students to gain real-world experience solving real problems. That learning is priceless and it will be fundamental for our education going forward.”
